Walking tours through the Thüringer Wald

Ilmenau is an ideal gateway to gentle and more serious walking in the surrounding hills and mountains of the Thüringer Wald. One long route, 20 km, is the Quality Path under the "Wanderbares Deutschland" scheme which goes by the name of Goethewanderweg. It links the points between Ilmenau and Stützerbach where Goethe spent time and figures importantly in the scheme's 370 km network of walking routes. Our other Quality Path, from Goethe to Bach (Von Goethe zu Bach), follows a route from Ilmenau to Arnstadt.
The well-marked paths will take you through delightful hills with wonderful views to be seen from the wooded tops.

Themed walking routes

Close to the famous Rennsteig trail, Ilmenau itself also offers plenty of interesting routes to explore: such as the Goethe Path or "old promenades" . The nature and geology trail around Heyda reservoir and the walking trail around the former bobsleigh track are particularly worth exploring.

The Ilmenau-Information office sells the appropriately scaled walking maps. Those who have spontaneously decided to go walking will find the right maps here; the office is open every day.
