GoetheStadtMuseum Ilmenau
The GoetheStadtMuseum (GSM) in Ilmenau is a vibrant place of exchange between the past and the future. Collecting, preserving and exhibiting form the heart of our work. The museum is based on the current quality standards established by the German Museum Association and we aim to provide our visitors with experience, knowledge and entertainment in a unique atmosphere. We are particularly happy to welcome school visits and families.
As a local history museum, our procurement work is primarily aligned with the subjects of our town's history. The work of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe in Ilmenau; his ministerial duty; his efforts in reviving the mining industry alongside his scientific research and his poetry form a strong thematic focus of the museum. But not only Goethe, as one of Germany's most historically important personalities, defines our range of topics. In addition to the once-flourishing copper and silver mining industry; the long lasting porcelain production; the former therapeutic baths business and the technical glass industry with its internationally-recognised inventions and the local educational tradition, culminating in today's university, are the key aspects of our research and communication work.
Our extensive, well-composed collection forms the basis for the alternating, remarkable exhibitions regarding various aspects of Ilmenau's town history.
The museum team cordially invites you to stroll through our permanent exhibitions and temporary exhibitions.
